Building on the foundation of his first collection, Stephen Bidwell returns with a second volume of tape drum samples, expanding the palette with even more depth and character. This time around, he fine-tuned the selection, capturing the nuances of his favorite snare drums on a particularly magic day in the studio. Expect an arsenal of crisp analog hi-hats, thunderous loops with multiple mix variations, an abundance of dynamic fills, and an impressive spread of vintage 1960s 3-ply tom samples—more than you ever knew you needed.
Recorded at Electric Deluxe—the creative hub of Austin producer and Black Pumas guitarist Adrian Quesada—this collection was shaped under the expert ear of house engineer Aaron Glemboski (aka Redbeard). Bidwell curated an eclectic mix of rare and custom-treated snare and kick drums, while Redbeard tapped into the studio’s treasure trove of classic and unconventional microphones. The sessions ran through a Collins all-tube broadcast console and a Neve 5060, ultimately landing on a 1-inch MCI JH-110 tape machine to preserve that unmistakable warmth and grit.
The result? A rich selection of one-shots and loops primed for anything from recreating vintage soul breakbeats to enhancing drum tracks with raw, organic energy. Whether you’re after a subtle touch of texture or the backbone for a full-blown hip-hop groove, these sounds deliver. About Stephen Bidwell:
Stephen Bidwell was born in Washington, DC, and grew up in the Virginia suburbs. Since first being handed drumsticks in the late 80s he has studied and lived in West Virginia, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, and New York but has called Austin, Texas home since 2005. Somewhere in those travels, he earned a Bachelors’s degree in classical percussion (two of them actually) and a Master’s degree in Jazz studies. Amid a very long list of teachers, Stephen counts studies with Johnny Vidacovich and Wayne Krantz as massively influential.
Since early 2018 Stephen has been the drummer for Grammy-nominated Black Pumas, a psychedelic soul group known for incendiary live shows. When not on tour with Black Pumas, Stephen plays in several diverse projects; afrobeat with Hard Proof, epic rock with The Calm Blue Sea, avant-lounge with the Mood Illusion, and as a sideman for an endless list of Austin artists. Aside from teaching privately and recording both from his home and East Austin studios, if you search “Bidwell” at Modern Drummer’s website you’ll find years worth of his interviews and invaluable drum journalism.
